The Art of Making
What if you made the journal yourself?
We spend so much time choosing the things we keep. But there is something different about creating them.
01 A sheet of paper becomes a page.
02 A few pages become a book.
03 And a blank book becomes a place for your thoughts, memories, sketches and dreams.
This is your invitation to try.
Chapter 01
HOW TO MAKE PAPER
It starts with a single sheet.
Before there is a journal, there is paper. Making your own paper is a simple way to experience the craft from the very beginning — transforming discarded paper and water into something new.
Step 01 / 05
Gather Your Materials
- Recycled / waste paper
- Water
- Tub or basin
- Blender
- Paper mould and deckle
- Sponge
- Absorbent cloth
- Flat drying surface
Step 02 / 05
Make the Pulp
Tear the paper into small pieces and soak it in warm water. Blend in short bursts until it becomes a smooth, porridge-like pulp.
Step 03 / 05
Form the Sheet
Stir the pulp into a tub of clean water. Dip the mould and deckle, lift it slowly and level, and let the water drain through the mesh.
Step 04 / 05
Press Out the Water
Turn the wet sheet onto an absorbent cloth. Press gently with a sponge, then leave it under a flat weight to release the remaining water.
Step 05 / 05
Let It Dry
Lay the sheet on a flat surface and let it air-dry completely. Patience is what gives handmade paper its flatness and strength.
FROM PULP TO PAPER.
And suddenly, a blank sheet has a story of its own.
Chapter 02
HOW TO AGE PAPER
Give new paper a little history.
There is something beautiful about paper that looks like it has already lived a life. With a few simple techniques, you can give your pages a warmer, softer and more weathered character.
Technique 01
Tea-Stained Paper
Brew a strong pot of black tea and let it cool. Brush it over the sheet or bathe the paper briefly — the tannins leave a soft, naturally aged warmth.
Technique 02
Coffee-Stained Paper
A wash of strong coffee creates a deeper, warmer tone. Sprinkle a few granules onto the wet sheet for darker speckles and age rings.
Technique 03
Soften the Edges
Tear edges slowly against a ruler, feather them with a damp brush, or rub them gently with fine sandpaper for a naturally worn border.
Technique 04
Add Texture
Press cloth, leaves or layered pulp into the damp sheet. Unevenness, fibre and layering are what give handmade pages their character.
Chapter 03
HOW TO BIND A BOOK
Bring the pages together.
A stack of pages becomes a book when you give it structure. Binding is where loose sheets become something you can hold, carry and keep.
Step 01 / 06
Prepare Your Pages
Gather your sheets, trim or tear them to size, and make sure every page is fully dry and flat before you begin.
Step 02 / 06
Fold and Arrange the Pages
Fold the pages into signatures — small booklets of four to six sheets — and stack them in the order you want them bound.
Step 03 / 06
Mark Your Binding Points
Measure and mark evenly spaced points along the fold of each signature, then pierce them gently with an awl or needle.
Step 04 / 06
Sew the Pages Together
With a needle and waxed thread, stitch through each hole in turn, linking one signature to the next along the spine.
Step 05 / 06
Attach the Cover
Fix the first and last pages to your cover — cloth, leather, or a heavier handmade sheet — and let the adhesive set.
Step 06 / 06
Finish Your Journal
Press the book under a weight overnight. Then trim, wrap, or tie it closed with a cord — it is ready to be filled.
At Pinnacle, every journal is still finished by hand. This is a simple beginner's version of that same binding tradition.
NOW YOU HAVE A BOOK.
What you put inside it is entirely yours.
Chapter 04 — Uses of the Journal
WHAT WILL YOU MAKE IT FOR?
A journal can become whatever you need it to be.
It can hold your everyday thoughts, your biggest plans, the places you've been, the things you're grateful for and the person you're becoming.
A Journal for You.
A space for affirmations, personal growth, small victories, things you love about yourself and reminders of how far you've come.
Keep the Journey.
Turn your journal into a travel companion. Record places, people, food, sketches, photographs, tickets and little moments you don't want to forget.
Notice the Good.
Use a few pages each day to record the people, moments and little things that made your day worth remembering.
A Place for Your Everyday.
Write about your day. Your thoughts. Your feelings. The things you said. The things you didn't. A private space that belongs entirely to you.
Write What You're Working Towards.
Use your journal to put your goals, intentions, dreams and future plans into words. Give your ideas somewhere to begin.
The Last Page Is Blank
THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO MAKE IT YOURS.
01 Make the paper.
02 Give it character.
03 Bind the pages.
04 Fill them with something that matters to you.
Because sometimes, the most meaningful things are the ones we make ourselves.
